Here is another important new publication analyzing current policy initiatives for city development. It comes from the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership in the EU and focusses on the range of city approaches to the 15-minute city concept which I have written about here before.
It provides a detailed analysis of the approaches adopted in numerous cities across Europe and elsewhere to their interpretation and development strategies for the 15-minute city concept.
Typology
Based on detailed data collection of city activities in this regard, the report establishes a typology of practices relating to
key areas of action
radical innovation, and
diversity in the range of actions taken.
Dimensions of practice
It examines city actions as a combination of policies relating to
sustainable urban mobility
people-centered urban spaces
smart urban logistics and service delivery, and
governance arrangements for the coordinated implementation of their chosen strategies.
Case studies
The report then illustrates practices in 6 cities (Bologna, Edinburgh, Ghent, Lisbon, Paris and Vienna) in a ‘deep dive’ into the rationale for the policies adopted in each city and details of its implementation. It provides reference to local policy documents and objectives and demonstrates the different character and emphasis in local interpretations of this widely discussed concept.
Overview
The report offers a very welcome framework for the analysis of the 15-minute city concept and its related variants and offers the most comprehensive overview of the current state of practice in cities in the forefront of this approach to urban planning and design. It provides insightful analysis for researchers and practitioners, including data on impacts, for those taking forward this sometimes controversial concept.
